Target reports in its first quarter earnings report
that its decoupled debit “Red” card are now nearly 12% of its sales, and up
over the same quarter a year ago. Of
course these transaction avoid any interchange cost and settle to your bank at
an ACH, earning you no money.
More important to Target and other retailers, the
decoupled debit card allows them to capture valuable sales information and make
customer specific offers. Such
strategies where information is more valuable than interchange are why retailers are displacing your debit
transactions with their decouple debit cards and prepaid cards, stealing your
revenue, relationships and payment relevance! One third of Starbuck sales are now on its prepaid card, and Cumberland Farms offers $.10 off per gallon of gas with its SmartPay decoupled debit card.
